NAMIBIA - A Journey Through Wild Landscapes and Breathtaking Horizons.

Namibia is a land of contrasts, where vast deserts meet teeming wildlife, and time seems to slow down amidst its rugged beauty.

Recently, my partner and I embarked on a 3,000 km adventure across this spectacular country in a 4x4, and it was nothing short of extraordinary.

From the wildlife-rich plains of Etosha to the dramatic landscapes of Damaraland and the iconic dunes of Sossusvlei, Namibia offers a travel experience like no other. Along the way, I discovered the importance of being well-prepared, not only in terms of planning but also in packing the right travel essentials for the journey.

Etosha National Park: A Wildlife Wonderland

Our journey began in Etosha National Park, a paradise for wildlife lovers.

The park’s famous salt pan stretches out endlessly, creating a surreal backdrop to the herds of animals that gather around the waterholes. During the dry season, it’s one of the best places to spot Namibia’s iconic wildlife, including elephants, lions, giraffes, and zebras.

Driving through the park, we experienced the thrill of a self-drive safari, where every turn brought the potential of a new and unforgettable sighting. For wildlife photographers and enthusiasts, Etosha is a must-visit, with the animals often coming so close you don’t need to leave your vehicle.

Staying in a glamping tent at Etosha was the perfect way to experience the wilderness up close, offering comfort and style while still feeling connected to nature.

Damaraland: Untamed Beauty and Ancient History

From Etosha, we drove around 430 km south to Twyfelfontein in Damaraland, a region known for its rugged beauty and rich cultural history. The landscape here is wild and dramatic, with jagged mountains, open plains, and ancient rock formations.

One of the highlights of Damaraland is the Twyfelfontein rock engravings, a UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring thousands of ancient petroglyphs created by Namibia’s early peoples.

After long, dusty drives on unsealed roads, watching the sun set over the red sandstone mountains, casting a golden glow over the land, was a moment of pure serenity.

Taking some downtime to relax by the pool was just as essential, offering a much-needed break amidst the adventure. It’s a place where history and nature come together, creating a truly unique travel experience.

Sossusvlei: The Red Dunes of the Namib Desert

Sossusvlei is perhaps the most iconic destination in Namibia, where the towering red dunes of the Namib Desert rise against the deep blue sky.

As we drove further into the desert, the landscape transformed into something almost otherworldly, with the soft, sweeping dunes creating an unforgettable visual spectacle. The dead trees of Deadvlei, standing stark against the dry clay pan, are a photographer’s dream. The white cracked land of Deadvlei adds a striking contrast to the vibrant reds of the dunes, creating a surreal scene.

Climbing Big Daddy, one of the tallest dunes in the world, was a challenge, but the panoramic views at the top were worth every step.

TRAVEL TIP

Packing Smart for the Journey

Driving across Namibia’s diverse and sometimes harsh landscapes requires careful preparation, and packing smartly is key to making the trip more comfortable and enjoyable.

A good pair of sunglasses is perfect not only for driving under the intense sun but also for relaxing by the pool after a long day of exploring.

Don’t forget a wide-brimmed hat to keep the sun off your face and a pair of binoculars to get the best views of wildlife or the stunning landscapes. Be ready for all your clothes to get dusty – Namibia’s terrain can be tough, and the dust gets everywhere!

A few key pieces of jewellery can add a touch of personal style without taking up much room, and versatile clothing is a must.

I found that a sturdy pair of leather boots made walking over rocky or sandy ground much easier. A quality leather belt and bag not only added some practicality to my travels but also kept me looking stylish, even in the desert :-)
