On a recent holiday back to Brazil, I had the unique experience of being a tourist in my hometown, São Paulo. Living in Australia for the last 17 years, it was fascinating to see the city where I was born and raised through fresh eyes and then escape to the nearby coastal gems of São Sebastião and Ilha Bela where I used to go during school holidays. Exploring these destinations with a mix of nostalgia and discovery allowed me to reconnect with my personal and cultural background, appreciate the breath-taking landscapes I once took for granted, and enjoy the warmth of the people I am part of.

The Scenic Road to Paradise

The journey to São Sebastião from São Paulo, the country's bustling economic hub, is an experience in itself. As you leave behind the urban sprawl, the landscape transforms into lush greenery. The winding roads of the Serra do Mar snake through the Mata Atlântica, Brazil’s coastal rainforest, offering breathtaking views of cascading waterfalls and dense vegetation. The Atlantic Forest is one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on the planet, and the drive is a perfect introduction to the natural beauty awaiting you on the northern coast.

São Sebastião: Colonial Charm and Coastal Bliss

Nestled along the north shore of the estate of São Paulo, São Sebastião is a delightful mix of history and natural beauty. Its cobblestone streets and vibrant, colourful houses harken back to the Portuguese colonial era, exuding a quaint charm that feels like stepping into another time. The beaches here are stunning, with golden sands and crystal-clear waters framed by the deep green of the rainforest visible from the ocean. Toucans and parrots often fly noisy yet gracefully between palm trees, adding to the enchanting scenery. With so many incredible spots to choose from, it’s almost impossible to pick a favourite

Just a short boat ride away from São Sebastião lies Ilha Bela, a name that translates to "Beautiful Island"—a fitting description for this tropical escape. Ferries carry both cars and passengers across the channel, and the adventure begins the moment you step foot on the island. Ilha Bela’s charm lies in its seclusion, with beaches that can only be reached by hiking trails or boat rides. Its unspoiled beauty is perfect for those seeking tranquillity, offering pristine sands, clear waters, and the lush embrace of nature.

THE WARMTH OF BRAZIL: PEOPLE AND CUISINE

Brazil is as much about its landscapes as it is about its people. Warm, friendly, and welcoming, Brazilians take pride in sharing their culture and traditions. In São Sebastião and Ilha Bela, this hospitality shines through in
every encounter. The local cuisine is a feast for the senses, featuring fresh seafood, tropical fruits, and traditional dishes like moqueca (a fish stew) and pão de queijo (cheese bread). Pair these with a caipirinha, Brazil’s iconic cocktail, and you’ll savour a true taste of this vibrant country.

Packing for summer feels so much easier with a few versatile pieces. A neutral colour pair of flat sandals is perfect - they're practical for exploring but chic enough for evening plans. My favourite crossbody leather bag is a must-have too; it holds everything I need and pairs effortlessly with any outfit. Adding one or two pieces of jewellery, like a statement necklace or bold earrings, is an easy way to elevate your look. These simple touches make it easy to transition from casual daytime to stylish evenings without overpacking.
