Oaxaca, known as the culinary heart of Mexico, is a feast for the senses. The city is famed for its mole, a complex sauce made from a blend of chillies, spices, and sometimes chocolate. There are many varieties, each with its own unique flavour profile. Another highlight is mezcal, a smoky spirit crafted from agave. Unlike tequila, mezcal uses a range of agave species and follows traditional distillation methods, making each bottle unique. Pair these delights with Oaxaca’s vibrant markets and artisan crafts for an authentic taste of Mexican culture.

Day of the Dead: Honouring Ancestors with Joy

Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is one of the most beautiful traditions I’ve ever encountered - a celebration of life, love, and memory. Watching the film Coco brought this festival vividly to life for me, with its stunning portrayal of the vibrant altars, marigold-filled pathways, and the deep connection between the living and the departed. Just like in the movie, families gather to honour their loved ones with altars (ofrendas) adorned with marigolds, candles, photographs, and the favourite foods of those who’ve passed. The atmosphere is a joyous blend of reverence and festivity, with parades, music, and colourful costumes filling the streets. Celebrated on November 1st and 2nd, Día de los Muertos is a heartfelt reminder of the enduring bonds we share with those we’ve lost - and Mexico’s extraordinary ability to turn remembrance into a celebration of life itself.

For those craving a mix of adventure and relaxation, Puerto Escondido is a dream come true. Renowned for its world-class surfing waves, it attracts surfers from across the globe. The town also boasts a vibrant nightlife, with beachfront bars, live music, and eclectic restaurants offering everything from fresh seafood to Mexican street food. Huatulco: Secluded Beaches and Untouched Beauty

Huatulco, just a short drive from Puerto Escondido, turned out to be one of the most peaceful and breathtaking places I visited on my trip. Driving there was an adventure in itself, with winding roads that revealed glimpses of lush greenery and the promise of the ocean ahead.

As part of a national park, Huatulco is home to pristine beaches and untouched coves that feel like a hidden paradise. One of the highlights was taking a boat to explore the secluded beaches, many of which are only accessible by water. Gliding across the crystal-clear waters of the Pacific, surrounded by dramatic cliffs and dense forests, I felt completely immersed in nature’s beauty. If you’re looking for a tranquil escape far from the crowds, Huatulco is an absolute must.

Packing for a summer escape in Mexico is a breeze when you focus on versatile essentials. A flowy and light linen dress or jumpsuit is perfect for staying cool while looking effortlessly chic. A wide-brimmed hat is your best friend for sun protection, while a crossbody bag keeps your belongings secure and your hands free for exploring markets and cobblestone streets.
